THE IDEA BEHIND THE EXPERIMENT

A border is a line.
A connection is a layer.

An EU flag does not tell you everything about movement, study, money or science. Switch layers and watch familiar neighbours form different groups.

The score is a lens you control. It measures selected institutional participation, not a person’s identity, quality of life or permission to cross a border.

What the number means

For the six reviewed dimensions, qualifying participation is 1 and non-qualifying participation is 0. The index is 100 × the sum of weighted qualifying values ÷ the sum of known active weights. Each weight is 0–3. Missing values are excluded and coverage is shown; if nothing is weighted or known, there is no score.

Partial or associated status is explained separately. Association qualifies where the framework’s criterion includes it; partial access is not automatically given half a point. Closely overlapping indicators are not added again.

A snapshot with a visible boundary

The nine reviewed layers are checked at country level. The other layers and territorial records are retained from the supplied draft and labelled accordingly. A source link in the draft is not a fresh verification. Future plans do not count as current participation.

Geographic scope

The country view covers the draft’s 51 country profiles, including Kosovo and transcontinental/political-Europe entries. Inclusion is not a recognition claim. Territories are excluded from country totals. Natural Earth boundaries are simplified to a Europe window; small places also have point targets. Crimea is joined to Ukraine for an internationally recognised territorial convention, and Cyprus is shown at country level. Country-level participation does not imply identical treaty application in every territory. No current control lines are represented.

The projection is a spherical Lambert azimuthal equal-area view centred on Europe. Connections are analytical links, not transport routes: up to eight places with the highest shared active framework weight, with alphabetical tie-breaking. Source geometry: Natural Earth, public domain ↗.

These records keep the draft’s qualifications, parent relationships and unresolved fields. They do not contribute to the country score.
